Haag’s elegant late harvest from the Juffer Sonnenuhr

The Romans had already planted grape vines in the Brauneberger Juffer location – and made wine from them, as the remains of the Roman wine press at the foot of the steep slope show. The 10.5 hectare Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard, whose name refers to the sundial located in the vineyard, is considered the heart of Brauneberger Juffer. The vines thrive on very steep slopes, between 110 and 180 m high, on slate soils with weathered Devonian slate in a topography, similar to a flat concave mirror. The wind-protected location, topography and the structure of the soil, which extends to the Moselle, create a special microclimate, which is reflected in mineral, elegant wines with fine acidity.

The VDP winery Fritz Haag, sometimes also named Dusemonder Hof, is very well known for its mineral, noble sweet wines, which are among the best in the world. The winery cultivates almost 20 hectares of vineyards, predominantly planted with Riesling, most of them in steep and steepest locations – some even with an 80% gradient. The winery has been run by Oliver Haag since 2005, who sees the foundation for the elegant Rieslings primarily in the natural care and sustainable management of the slate slopes. Like all of the winery’s wines, the grapes are picked by hand and the must is fermented spontaneously.

Stony, slightly smoky notes on the nose. On the palate apricot, delicate tropical fruit notes, some Granny Smith, delicate floral, subtle sweetness, beautifully balanced by lively acidity, mineral, an elegant and excellent wine with a very good finish, nice drinking flow and very good potential.
