Rothenberg, Hipping, Pettenthal and Ölberg are vineyards lying at the red slope near the Rhine-Hessian Nierstein. In all these vine locations the Bodenheim based winery Kühling-Gillot owns vineyards. The winery which operates since the 19th century in the winegrowing business, besides the two main grape varieties Riesling and Pinot Noir has planted on its 11 hectares of vineyards Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer and to a smaller amount Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
Since 2002 Carolin Kühling-Gillot leads the winery, since 2006 supported by her husband Hans-Oliver Spanier from the winery Battenfeld-Spanier. The wines are produced under consideration of biodynamic aspects in an ecological way. The success of the winery, which focuses the wine productionon the authenticity of the wines – defined by the expression of the flavors of the location, the soil and the stone – is reflected in many awards. The most recent include the Best White Wine Collection (Eichelmann 2018) and Winegrower of the Year (Vinum 2018).
The tasted Riesling Auslese 2015 comes from the vineyards in Pettenthal. There, the winery owns the, with more than 70% slope steepest vineyard district of Rheinhessen. The Rotliegende, a soil of red slate and red sandstone, is here particularly close to the surface, the humus layer extremely thin, the soil thus very sparse, which forces the vines to drive their roots into the soft stone to get to the required nutrients. Perfect conditions to create a terroir-influenced large wine.
