Dr. Hermann’s Top Selection – Old Vines from the Erdener Prälat

With a slope of around 65 degrees, the Erdener Prälat is one of the steepest vineyards in Germany. The site also boasts an exceptionally high proportion of old, ungrafted Riesling vines. Thanks to its southern exposure in the Moselle loop and the heat-retaining rocks, the site enjoys a very warm microclimate, from which the vines benefit. The red slate soil also contributes to the complexity of these top-quality Rieslings. We tasted one of these examples, the 2022 Riesling Auslese Erdener Prälat Alte Reben from the Dr. Hermann winery.

The VDP-winery was founded in 1967 from the division of the Joh. Jos. winery. Christoffel Erben in Ürzig, because an ancestor of the current owner founded his own winery, thus continuing the centuries-long tradition of winemaking in the Hermann family.

Today, the estate is among the best in the sweet wine category and enjoys a worldwide reputation. The Erden-based winery owns parcels in Erden, like Treppchen, Herzlei and Prälat as well as Ürziger Würzgarten, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Lösnicher Försterlay, as well as Kinheimer Hubertuslay and Rosenberg. Approximately 16 hectares of vineyards are cultivated – 90% of which are on steep or very steep slopes, 95% planted with Riesling.

Botrytis notes are complemented by delicate apricot aromas on the nose. On the palate, almond and herbal notes, fine, appealing botrytis, slightly bitter lemon zest, and a touch of orange. The vibrant acidity is beautifully balanced, leading to a very long finish that reveals salty and stony notes as it fades, culminating in a memorable final note with the citrus peel. An outstanding wine.
