The Schloss Lieser winery receives top marks from wine guides and wine critics. The wine guides Vinum, Eichelmann and Falstaff have given it 5 grapes and 5 stars respectively, making it one of the absolute top wine producers. The wines from the winery are also repeatedly awarded top marks – for example by Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson and ⁄.
This is certainly also due to the great care that the winery devotes to wine production, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The grape harvest is usually carried out in three to four rounds and can sometimes take up to 8 weeks in one plot in order to harvest the grapes at the best possible time. The must is pressed cool, with low pressure and in such a way that the grapes are not subject to maceration. The unfiltered must is fermented exclusively spontaneously, i.e. with indigenous yeasts and almost always in stainless steel. During aging, the wine then remains in contact with the yeast for longer.
The Schloss Lieser winery and thus also owner Thomas Haag are and have been very successful with this type of winemaking. This made it possible to repeatedly buy or lease plots in excellent Moselle locations and thus expand the vineyard area to around 25 hectares. The purchases also include, for example, shares of the large Piesporter Goldtröpfchen location, from which the Riesling Auslese 2022 tasted also comes. This location is located in a Moselle loop near Piesport that stretches from southeast to southwest, so it gets a lot of sun. The heavily weathered soil, Devonian slate interspersed with quartzite, is deep, which enables a good water supply.
Riesling Auslese Piesporter Goldtröpfchen 2022, Schloss Lieser (Tasted)
Lots of stone and notes of stone fruit on the nose. On the palate, stony notes, citrus-spicy saltiness, fine exotic fruits, refreshing acidity and subtle sweetness. A lively, very elegant, juicy and complex, excellent wine with a very long finish.
