Port wine, one of the most famous sweet, fortified wines, comes in different styles and flavors.
Red port wine can basically be divided into the two styles Ruby and Tawny. The Ruby type wines are light to dark red in color and mature mostly in the bottle, while the tawny to amber Tawny wines have a longer maturation with oxygen contact in the wooden barrel. There are also the white and the rosé port.
Port wine takes its name from the Portuguese port city of Porto, but the vines grow in the hinterland of Porto on meager, stony slate soils, along the Douro River in the eponymous region.
